Keeping Active Longer

At Kensington Neighbourhood House we understand the importance of regular physical activity. This is particularly so as we age, as physical inactivity is one of the leading causes of ill health among senior Australians.

The Kensington Neighbourhood House secured funding from Bendigo Bank and Connected Communities Melbourne to run a pilot program. For 10 weeks we trialled five different types of exercise classes, at three venues in Kensington, on Tuesdays and Fridays. This helped us determine how, where and when seniors like to exercise.

In total we had 36 seniors participate in one or more of the classes. In addition to the physical activity, participants told us that they also enjoyed the social aspect of the classes. They also reported increased strength and balance as a result of attending the classes.

Following the pilot we added two of the most popular activities to our regular program. We now offer the following three different physical activity classes for seniors each week.

  • Gentle Movement on Mondays 10am-11am. This is a mindful movement class that combines yoga, relaxation and exercise for peace of mind and body. Cost $20 per month.
  • Walking Group on Tuesdays 10.30am-11.30am. Starting at the Neighbourhood House this group explores Kensington and its surrounds each week. No cost.
  • Gentle Exercise on Fridays 9.30am-10.30am. This is a low impact class that uses light weights and resistance bands to improve stamina, strength, flexibility and balance. Cost $20 per month.

With all of these activities, it’s all about participation. It doesn’t matter if you can’t touch your toes or don’t have the latest gym gear. Just wear whatever’s comfortable and give it a go.
