Kensington Neighbourhood House offers a wide variety of Courses and Workshops throughout the School Term. Below are the courses and workshops being offered in Term 1 and 2, 2011. Some are 'one off' workshops, others run weekly.

This class is for people of all abilities who enjoy expressing themselves creatively. Activities include card making, simple mosaics, pot painting, plus more. This course will teach you how to make a basic stencil design to apply an image to a screen and correct screen-printing techniques. You will leave with your own unique design and hand-printed onto products of your choice. Students are required to bring along up to four items from home (e.g. old pillowcases, scraps of fabric, tote bag, t-shirts). Laura has a background in Screen-Printing for Fine Art and Textiles. She studied Screen-Printing and Design at the Queensland College of Art, and has also worked for textile design studio: Thea and Sami. An exciting introduction to the potential of writing for yourself and others. Explore a different aspect of writing on the first Wednesday of each month including character, story and dialogue. These intensive workshops are co-facilitated by Emilie Collyer (Kensington Neighbourhood House resident creative writing teacher) along with a specialist guest writer in each category. Writers will be announced closer to each date. Short Stories - Saturday 24th March - 10am-1pm (bookings close 12 March) - What makes a great short story? This intensive workshop will give you the tools to imagine, write and polish a piece of short fiction. Get insights and advice from an experienced short story writer. Novel Writing - Saturday 28th April - 10am-1pm (bookings close 16 April) - Do you have an unfinished manuscript in the bottom drawer? Whether you are at first idea, final draft, or somewhere in between, this workshop will equip you with tips and skills to get that novel finished. Get advice from an experienced novelist. Crime Writing - Saturday 16th June - 10am-1pm (bookings close 4 June) - The dark side of life fascinates readers and writers alike. What makes a compelling crime story? How well do you have to know the rules of this genre - and when can you start breaking them? Get great tips from an experienced crime writer. Cost $35 / $25 (concession) per class |

Group Meditation Class Starts 15 February for 7 weeks You will learn how meditation can be a simple and powerful tool that can make tangible positive differences in your life. In each class you will be guided in meditation to assist you in finding better health and wellbeing on your path to peacefulness. This 14-week course will provide practical information and hands-on experience on how to design a food garden in the inner city using permaculture principles. It will show you how easy it is to grow your own food organically and produce a yield. Through the course participants will be able to design their own food gardens to implement at home. Sessions offer a variety of cardio work (with some boxing to get rid of that extra tension!), strength and conditioning work using hand weights and swiss balls to get you toned and terrific. Each session is different but you are guaranteed a great, fun workout! Sessions are held either at the Neighbourhood House or JJ Holland Park depending on the weather. Many of us find ourselves throwing away uneaten food. This workshop looks at portion sizes, ways of storing food and how to make the most of your fridge, freezer and pantry. If like many people you are confused by "best before", use by, display until and "sell by" dates, then the workshops will help explain the difference. Ever wanted to make your own preserves but not sure how? Do you have a glut of zucchinis or beetroot in the garden and would like to make something with them?
