Feeling stronger, inside and out.

If there’s one thing we should all know by now it’s that exercise is good for us. It’s good for our bodies and it’s great for our minds. But it can be really hard to get started!
Samantha Flanagan (Sam) has been leading exercise classes at Kensington Neighbourhood House for over 10 years. She has some great advice for anyone wanting to move more: “Start small, start where you are, don’t overthink things and listen to your body. No one walks into a class knowing everything. We all start somewhere, so just be kind to yourself.”
Sam is passionate about building people’s confidence. “The hardest part is just walking through the door — after that, you’re already winning! And if in doubt, just keep moving. Every little bit counts.”
Here at the neighbourhood house, we know that our exercise classes are about more than just the physical. People love the connection, the chats and the laughter. When asked her favourite thing about teaching at the house, Sam says “Hands down, it’s the people I’ve met through the years. The laughs, the conversations, (even the groaning). This is my happy place. There’s a real sense of connection and support in the classes. It’s not just about exercise - it’s about showing up, having a go, and being part of something. That’s what keeps me coming back every week”.
Over the years, Sam’s own exercise practices have evolved. “I love anything that gets people moving and smiling at the same time. Recently, after completing yoga training in India, I’ve developed a real appreciation for slower, more mindful movement as well. It taught me a lot about connection, not just physically, but mentally too. If I had to choose, I’d say a mix of strength, functional movement, and a bit of that mindful practice. I love seeing people discover what their bodies are capable of, especially when they try something they never thought they could do. That moment of “oh wow, I can do this” is so inspiring. I think movement should feel empowering, not punishing. It should build you up, not break you down and ideally leave you walking out feeling just that little bit stronger, both inside and out.”
If you would like a bit more movement in your life, Kensington Neighbourhood House offers a range of low cost, weekly classes. You can find all the details on our website
