Kensington Neighbourhood House is many things to many people. For some, it is their exercise hub. For others, it’s where they get help with homework. Some visit to dig holes in the sandpit. Others attend English or Computer classes. And on any given day, people of all ages will be visiting the house to draw, paint, sing or dance.
When life feels uncertain, creating is one of the ways we humans find balance. Creativity acts as a powerful tool for enhancing mental health. It reduces stress, anxiety, and depression while building self-esteem.
As any dedicated crafter knows, engaging in creative activities - such as painting, sewing, writing, or music, helps us feel good. The science backs this up. Lots of studies show that the act of creating releases feel-good neurochemicals like dopamine and serotonin.
At the neighbourhood house, we offer many ways for people to express themselves. Here are just a few of the options:
Stitching Time (Thursdays 1.30pm-3.30pm). Join a group of locals to work on your own crafts. On any given Thursday, weaving, quilting, embroidery or crochet projects are underway. This is an informal group for people to work on their own crafts in the company of others. Tea and chat guaranteed!
“Kensingers” Community Choir (Wednesdays 7.30pm-9.00pm). A wonderful opportunity to sing your heart out once a week. No auditions needed.
Beginners Art Class (Tuesdays 1pm-3pm). Join experienced art teacher, Sarah Brownlow, to learn the foundations of drawing, painting and mixed media art. This is perfect for anyone who wants to create but doesn’t know where to start.
Women Dance & Celebrate (monthly on Mondays 7pm-9pm). This gentle movement session brings women together to learn various circle dances from across the globe.
You can find more about these activities, plus the many other creative options the neighbourhood house offers on our website. Alternatively, just give us a call on 9376 6366. We love to chat.
